About Gordon Barney
Gordon was born around 1944 near Birrno, which is his country, near the main homestead of Alice Downs Cattle Station in the East Kimberley. He resides at Norton Bore Community, Via Turkey Creek with his wife, international artist Shirley Purdie. Gordon is well known in the region as a stockman who worked on many cattle stations, including Springvale, Chinaman’s Garden country and Alice Downs, locations which form much of he content of his paintings. Gordon Barney is an important Western Australian Aboriginal painter, a senior lawman in his community, and a respected dancer at community ceremonies.
Gordon began painting in 1998 with the encouragement of his wife, Shirley, and like her, favors the thick, crusty ocher medium. His depictions of the hills and rugged country he worked during his life quickly became noticed by collectors, and his relatively short painting career has been extremely successful.
About Joormin, Yarrunga Country
Joorrmin is the name of the river and the hills at this place, low down from Yarrunga (Chinaman's Garden). Yarrunga is Gordon's country. It lies on Alice Downs Station, where Gordon was born and worked for many years. This was country that Gordon used to muster cattle through and used to camp here during holidays from the station.
